Eason Spelling Bee 2024 Week 8

We are nearing the end of the 2024 Spelling Bee county finals. Louth and Meath this week, and then Cavan and Monaghan are where we end of this round. Then we will move on to the Provincials finals! But first, let’s take a look at those who took park and won the Louth and Meath county finals.

Louth

In Louth, we were hosted by the wonderful Dundalk Grammar School, where we had some lovely helpers from Transition Year help us unload all of our things, and kept the hall clear for us. They were a wonderful help. And the hall in the Grammar School was fantastic – a lovely big stage that was perfect for the competition. Our spellers certainly felt as if they were in the spotlight! But they all took a shine to it and were fantastic on the stage.
10 students travelled into Dundalk to compete, and the winner was Mark Phillips from Rampark National School.
Mark kept his cool and was able to correctly spell ‘unhabituated’ to cinch his win. We cannot wait to see him at the Provincial Final on May 21st.

Meath

Then we travelled to Meath, where the competition was held in Réalt na Mara Boys National School. And here we had even more fantastic helpers – though these were all 6th-class students. But another wonderful school with a fantastic hall, and who were fantastic hosts.
We had a bigger competition this day, with 17 students eager to be crowed Meath County Champion.
After a tense competition, the winner emerged as Isabelle Ledwith from Rathregan National School.
Isabelle was cool as cucumber the entire competition, and emerged victorious when she correctly spelled ‘biometeorology’ in a tense head-to-head round against another student.
Isabelle will now be representing Meath in the Provincial final.

We want to wish a massive congratulations to all students who will be moving on to the Provincial Finals in May. Everyone fought hard to earn their place and we are so impressed with the level of competency and talent on display from all schools this year.
